Educational Leadership In and Beyond the Classroom

This course introduces the study of culture, organization, and leadership in K-12 schools. We explore leadership theories and practices and their application to current educational settings, educational leadership models, focus on moral dilemmas, ethical concepts and the general nature of ethical reasoning in varied school settings. We consider educational organizations and the societal and cultural influences that affect the delivery of schooling. Issues we will consider include teacher shortages and burnout, widening learning gaps, student mental health crises, the impact of technology, school safety/violence, funding disparities, and political interference (curriculum debates, book bans). We will apply models of leadership to many of these current issues facing PK-12 schools.
