Making Place Matter: Ways We Shape Place and Ways Place Shapes Us

Given our busy, task oriented, ambitiously driven campus culture, how can we begin to create “spaces and places” that invite us to go deeper with our peers and with faculty/staff/community members? How do we begin to disrupt “default assumptions” that spaces/places “are just there” and we have to “fit in” – and move towards a more critical view that spaces/places are not neutral or value free?

Join Duke Service-Learning and Dean Valerie Ashby for an interactive conversation with Duke students, faculty, staff, and neighborhood leaders as we examine our assumptions about the places and spaces we exist in - and those that exist within us. There will be plenty of opportunities for deep and careful listening, thoughtful questions, the interruption of default perspectives, and learning together how to overcome impediments to a healthier, more equitable, inclusive campus community.
