"Calvin has a way of working with students that is both incredibly compassionate and also challenging of some of their very basic assumptions. He will ask questions in ways that illicit honest, profound and reflexive responses about everything from the structural issues that lead to the marginalization of some communities over others, to different types and structures of power, to the role of race and gender in the communities and organizations with whom they work. I am always entirely impressed by Calvin’s ability to facilitate these conversations in ways that lead students to new insights without feeling as if they are being lead. As the Director of Rural Forward, an organization that amplifies the impact of rural leaders, organizations, and coalitions through capacity building and resource development, Calvin played a critical role in helping Duke students connect curriculum with community engagement."
