David L. Paletz Call for Innovative Course Enhancements

David L. Paletz Call for Innovative Course Enhancements

Trinity College’s liberal arts curriculum focuses on student learning that is active and inquiry-based. When students engage firsthand, the learning process is deeper and richer. Thanks to the generosity of a number of donors, Trinity College is circulating the David L. Paletz Call for Innovative Course Enhancements, inviting proposals for funds to add innovations to courses taught in the spring 2019 semester. The proposals should be designed to meet any of the following practices modeled by Professor Paletz during his long teaching career at Duke:

  • To inspire critical thinking and challenging discussion
  • To require or introduce students to original research
  • To enable students to produce original papers, films, videos, exhibitions, performances, or other accomplishments
  • To provide access to experiences, primary materials, or programs off campus
  • To expose students to outside speakers (including practitioners)
  • To create innovative course design (including use of new technologies)

Please provide a description of the proposed activity, how it directly relates to your course objectives, and how it benefits the entire class. Include student learning objectives, a preliminary budget, and the number of students in your class. Indicate if you have received previous funding, if appropriate.

Awards may vary in amount from $200 to $5,000, depending on the project. Paletz support is limited each semester. In addition to the criteria above, the committee also considers how to maximize the funding of Paletz projects while leveraging other appropriate sources of funding at Duke. Recipients should evaluate and report back on the activity or experience by May 15, 2019.

Proposals should be submitted to Becca Ibarra (becca.ibarra@duke.edu, Box 90050) no later than November 26, 2018 for decisions to be announced in December 2018. In exceptional circumstances, proposals can be submitted outside of this time frame.
