Meet Our New Assistant Director: Kimmie Garner!

Please join us in welcoming Kimmie Garner to her new role as Assistant Director of Duke Service-Learning! Kimmie comes to us with deep experience in social work and women’s health.  She honed a foundation in reciprocal partnerships among faculty, students, and communities as a student participant and organizer in UNC’s APPLES Service-Learning Program; an experience she describes as transformative, and one that has influenced her professional and civic involvement as a social work practitioner ever since.

Since graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2011 with majors in Global Studies and Women’s Studies and a minor in Social and Economic Justice, Kimmie has lived in New York, Montana, New Mexico, and Boone, NC. She has worked in Colgate University’s Center for Women’s Studies, received her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Montana, and served in hospital and clinic environments in Montana and New Mexico as a bilingual perinatal social worker and lactation counselor.

Kimmie most recently worked in Boone on a five-county maternal and child health project seeking to reduce infant mortality, improve birth outcomes, and improve child health for 0-5 year olds.

She is thrilled to return to the service-learning field and connect faculty, students, and community stakeholders in ethical, intentional, and lasting collaborations in Durham.

We hope you'll come by the West Duke Building (2nd Floor;  in the Program of Education) and say hello!

A few fun things about Kimmie:

  • She's taking Japanese this semester to prepare for a trip there in December!
  • Her first experience traveling abroad for a service collaboration was the Dominican Republic!
  • Her favorite food is sushi!
