Major in Sustainable Urban Planning through Program II

Zoë (she/her) is a native North Carolinian, avid reader, and passionate urbanist. In addition to designing a Program II degree in Sustainable Urban Planning, she has spent her time at Duke cultivating the Duke Initiative for Urban Studies. She loves to volunteer off-campus and has engaged with Durham community members through the Hart Leadership Program's SOL and PEP programs (2021 and 2022 cohorts, respectively). She's a mentor with Duke Partnership for Service and, as an RA, loves to invite her residents to off-campus events. As she says, "intentional and ethical community engagement is something we practice - and carry out better together." She's currently conducting thesis research into the correlation between parking justice and equitable walkability in Southern cities like Durham!

Since her first service learning and civic engagement course - Sustainability Theory and Practice - Zoë has been enamored by the complex and ever-changing town-gown relationship between Duke and Durham. Working with non-profits and associations at every level through three additional SLCE courses in successive semesters, Zoë found her niche liaising with community partners. This semester she is excited to facilitate student engagement as a Service Learning Assistant for Professor Andrew Nurkin's Arts Policy, Leadership, and Engagement course. Ask her about her take on collaboration between individuals, non-profits, municipal government, and local businesses!
