My involvement in service-learning began because I wanted to apply classroom concepts to solve problems in a real-world setting.
Since I had participated extensively in service activities before, I knew that what I was learning in class about research methods, ethics, and health would benefit my performance as a volunteer. Participating in service-learning has given me the opportunity to engage in Duke's greater culture of service and civic engagement.
My experience has led me to research the impact of service-learning on the relationship between universities and local communities with the hope that those engaged in service will approach their work in a way that is equitable for all parties that are involved.
