Being Rather Than Seeming

Teaching Asset Mapping through Community-Engaged Projects

Thursday, October 30, -
Speaker(s): Professor Andrew Nurkin
Through asset mapping, students learn a strengths-based approach to community-engaged work. In a service-learning context, they gain appreciation for the unique attributes that constitute a community, challenge the narratives of need that too often permeate the university-community relationship, and honor the expertise of community members as leaders and knowledge bearers.

In this workshop, Prof. Andrew Nurkin will provide an overview of asset mapping as a vital tool in the practice of asset-based community development. He will share concrete examples of how Duke students have applied asset mapping in service-learning assignments through the Hart Leadership Program. Attendees will also have the opportunity to brainstorm ways to incorporate asset mapping exercises into their own teaching, research, and advising.

By the end of the session, participants will leave with both a foundational understanding of asset mapping and practical ideas for integrating this community-engaged practice into their own work. Register at the link.
