We are currently hiring service-learning assistants!

Do you enjoy cultivating relationships with professors, students and community partners? As a Service-Learning Assistant with Duke Service-Learning, you have the opportunity to:

  • Identify and develop appropriate community partnerships (service placements)

  • Oversee and monitor service-learning placements throughout the semester

  • Facilitate critical reflection and integration with academic content

  • Assist with research related to service-learning

Former SLA Testimonials:

"I’ve learned a lot of things as a Service Learning Assistant that have deepened my own interest in social justice. Being an SLA has helped me become more intentional with my actions, clear about my values, and conscious of my strengths, weaknesses, and areas of improvement in the context of social advocacy. As an SLA, I now know myself more intimately and can pull from my experiences to effectively apply them to challenges and topics at hand."

-Michelle Chen, SLA, Stories for Social Change, Spring 2018

"Far too often, I feel the pain and needs of those within our own community are ignored as we attempt to innovate in and gain prestige for fixing problems in faraway places. Over the course of the semester, it has been a rewarding process to watch these students reconnect with the issues facing not only our country, but our very own Durham."

-Allison Carmody, SLA, EHD 290S: Evaluating Healthcare Innovation, Spring 2018

Work Schedule and Compensation:

SLAs may be assigned to work with one or more courses per semester, depending on availability. Each student’s work-study allocation and particular assignment(s) will determine the work schedule. On average, SLAs work about five hours/week per course, though work hours can fluctuate greatly from week to week. In some courses the bulk of this work is concentrated in the first few weeks of the semester. In most cases the work can be completed on the SLA’s own schedule, however certain tasks may be pre-scheduled, e.g., attending class, or required to take place during business hours, e.g., making phone calls to community partners. SLAs are expected to be available to work for at least one full semester, and are often invited to continue in future semesters.

If you would like to apply for the Fall 2018 semester, please send your work study verification and amount, an updated resume, and a paragraph describing your interest in becoming a service-learning assistant. Please email these documents to Kimmie Garner, Assistant Director of Duke Service-Learning, at kimberly.garner@duke.edu as soon as possible. Thank you!

NOTE: SLA positions are federal or Duke work-study positions, paid at $16/hour. SLAs submit biweekly time reports and are paid based on actual hours worked.
